CEDESCO Model Farm Project
Cochabamba, Bolivia
1989 - 1990 |
Affiliated with Outreach International, the Cochabamba Center for Social Development (CEDESCO) Model Farm Projects helped people improve their agricultural practices. The improvements are translated directly into increased income. The Marigold Flower Project, for example, has assisted several farmers in increasing the production more than 200% during 1989 to 1990. These same improved farming techniques are being transferred to the other traditional crops as well.
The Agricultural Association donated funds to aid in the purchase and development of a model farm project for the production of berries and marigold flowers as well as to provide small loans to participating Bolivian farmers for fertilizer, seedlings, and other production costs. It also helped farmers who, for moral reasons, chose not to participate in production of Bolivian coca, which is refined into cocaine. |
LaGuana Lake Organizing Program
The Philippines |
ORTRADEV, a Philippine research and development foundation, with previous Outreach International funding, promoted the consolidation of eight LaGuana Lake fishermen's federations in 1987 to pool their resources and act to solve serious lake problems. Issues include pollution from industrial and agricultural wastes, the proliferation of giant fish-pens controlled by large corporations, and illegal fishing activities due to increasingly poorer fish catches. The project focuses on further organizing activities among the fishermen, a broader support group, and governmental policy changes. |
Potable Water Projects
Haiti
1983 |
The goal of the project was to construct potable water systems by the people living in and around identified communities to help prevent communicable diseases associated with contaminated drinking water.
Funds were used for well-drilling equipment, cement, construction materials (form boards, buckets, iron, tools) and piping supplies. The community councils mobilized the villagers to dig trenches, transport material and provide other necessary labor.
- The money made from these projects was put back into the community, not to individuals.
- The community decided how the money would be used.
- As assumption was that if the people are educated to help themselves, they are more committed to the projects.
- All projects were done with volunteer labor.

Vegetable and Chicken Production Project
Haiti
1983 |
The purpose of this project was to help provide rural Haitians with more productive vegetable seedlings and chicken productions projects. Its objective was twofold:
- To provide more effective food production for rural Haitian residents.
- To assist rural Haitian communities in their efforts to improve economic conditions.
Agriculture was a top priority within the Haitian government. At the time, these kinds of projects were not available, and economic conditions were not good. This project was in great need, and help boosted the economy. |
